The words in English grammar are identified in various parts of speech, each indicating a particular part of speech based on its characteristics. The parts of speech are very important for a sentence as they influence the meaning of the sentence. They are eight in number. They are:
Parts of Speech
Noun
Noun indicates the names present in the sentence. All the names of persons, places, and things are known as nouns. For example, Abraham Lincoln, Pen, New York, Mumbai all of these are nouns since they are names.

Pronoun
A pronoun is used instead of a noun to prevent the repetitiveness of the noun. There are various types of pronouns such as personal pronouns, relative pronouns, interrogative pronouns, reflective pronouns, demonstrative pronouns etc. Some pronouns are I, we, You, he, she, it, they, who, how, when etc.

Adjective
An adjective is a word that describes the quality of the noun or the pronoun. Some adjectives are beautiful, fast, high, deep, wonderful, strong etc.

Verb
The verb denotes “action” of the noun or pronoun in the sentence. The verb is perhaps the most important concept of parts of speech since it is directly linked with tenses, voice, and speech.

Adverb
An adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of the verb, or an adjective or an adverb. For starters, the word’ly’ is added to some verbs to make them adverbs.

Preposition
A preposition adds meaning to the sentence by placing it before a noun or a pronoun. It indicates the direction and meaning of the whole sentence. Some prepositions are in, at, in front of, before, after, etc.
